From Greece to Turkey: A voyage through History...

SUGGESTION OF ITINERARY:

DAY 1 ~ 22nd June

IRAKLION - Guests to arrive from Iraklion airport to the yacht moored at the commercial port of IRAKLION. From here it is a short coach drive to visit the well known archaeological site of the Minoan palace of KNOSSOS about 2.5 miles from the port. There is also the museum of Iraklion which is well worth a visit. Although Iraklion itself is a busy commercial port and city, it is well worth the stay to visit these two sites. Remain at the port for the night.

DAY 2 ~ 23rd June 36 nautical miles/3 hours

AYIOS NIKOLAOS - Depart after breakfast for a coastal cruise along the north coast of CRETE to arrive at the anchorage of AYIOS NIKOLAOS before lunch. Visit ashore to this busy tourist town with its inner "lake" Almira Liman. This is supposedly bottomless and is an extinct volcanic crater surrounded by the old town. Alternatively watersports in the bay. Remain here for the night.

DAY 3 ~ 24th June 135 nm/11.25 hrs

LINDOS - Leave during the night for the journey north west to the island of RHODES. Anchor by late morning at the popular bay of LINDOS. Watersports and swimming in the bay before a visit ashore in the early evening, after the crowds have departed, to visit the Acropolis and medieval castle perched high above the town. This dates from the prosperous Middle Ages with its winding streets and old houses decorated with pebble mosaics.

DAY 4 ~ 25th June 24 nm/2 hrs

RHODES - Leave after breakfast for a leisurely cruise along the coast to the port of RHODES. Moor before lunch stern to the quay of LIMIN EMBORIKOS, close to the old walled city, built by the Knight Templars. Visit ashore to the impressive Castle of the Knights, now a museum. Alternatively, shopping in the old town with its maze of narrow cobbled streets. Here we also complete clearance formalities for our departure from Greek waters. Remain here for the night.

DAY 5 ~ 26th June 25 nm/2 hrs

MARMARIS - Depart after breakfast to cross to the coast of TURKEY to arrive at MARMARIS by late morning. Either moor stern to the town quay or, alternatively, alongside at the marina. Here we must complete formalities to enter Turkey. Perhaps a visit ashore to the extensive colourful covered bazaars for shopping and later to one of the many good restaurants in the old town to sample the local Turkish cuisine.

DAY 6 ~ 27th June 20 nm/1.70 hrs

ECKINCEK - Depart early for EKINCEK. Here you can go with a small local boat along the KOYCEGIZ RIVER to view the rock tombs and ancient CAUNOS. Watersports in the bay at Ekincek or a visit to the TURTLE BEACH (Iztuzu) at the mouth of the river. Perhaps a walk ashore in the evening amongst the pine clad slopes or a visit to the well known restaurant overlooking the anchorage.

DAY 7 ~ 28th June 36nm/ 3hrs

GEMILER ADASI - Leave early to arrive in time for breakfast at GEMILER ADASI (St George's Island). Moor stern to the trees in the sheltered anchorage. Visit the island's extensive Byzantine ruins or take a small boat trip to OLU DENIZ (Dead Sea) closed now to larger yachts to protect its natural beauty. Here there is also the impressive BELKIZ sandy beach.

DAY 8 ~ 29th June 48 nm/ 4hrs

KAS - Depart at first light to cruise along the impressive coast known as "The Seven Capes" and past the now silted ancient port of Patara to anchor for the remainder of the day at PORT LONGOS, close to the town of KAS. DAY 9 ~ 30th June 15 nm/1.25

KEKOVA - Away early for a cruise through the sheltered waters of KEKOVA ROADS to the "Castle Anchorage" of KALE COY. Watersports in the bay or a visit ashore to the quaint hamlet with its Lycian tombs and castle with a miniature theatre cut into the rock. Alongside KEKOVA ISLAND lies one of the 'sunken cities'. Diving and snorkelling are forbidden here but it is well worth a small boat trip.

DAY 10 ~ 1st July 65 nm/5.5hrs

GULF OF FETHIYE - Leave at first light to cruise back along the coast to the sheltered waters of the GULF OF FETHIYE. Anchor for the remainder of the day at one of the many anchorages such as CLEOPATRA’S BAY.
